Effective Learning for the Dentist
“When It Comes Time to Transition Your Practice, How Will You Do It?"
"Let's Get Some Ideas!"
Since all dentists will transition at some time, it makes sense to look at this issue dispassionately and plan your exit, rather than letting it happen or slowly creeping up on you. I am bringing together some of the smartest people I know to talk about the whole issue of transitioning your dental practice.
This is a special invitation meeting for dentists only. I'm sorry not to include wives and team members for this one, but I really want it to be a small group of like-minded dentists with lots of give-and-take. I think the participants will be a critical factor and I want to include those who will be able to add to the conversation we will be having.
As an aside, there will be no sales and no decisions made at this meeting. When the dentist gets home, he/she will have plenty of ideas to talk over with his/her spouse before any important decisions are made. This meeting will be about learning, brainstorming and understanding some new ideas for transitioning beyond the typical "practice sale." Of course, typical "practice sales" will be included in the lineup.
Dates
The meeting will be on Friday and Saturday, March 21-22. We will begin both mornings at 8:00. Friday will go to about 4:30.
Friday evening will be a wine and appetizer reception from 5:30 - 7:00 at the Coker's home and then dinner back at the club afterwards.
Saturday will conclude about 3:00 or whenever we get tired of talking.
We could try to get a little golf in afterwards for those who are interested. Of course, it gets dark about 5:30 and not sure if the weather will cooperate. For those "real golfers," you can stay through Sunday and we can try to get in 18 then.
Speakers
I have three very interesting sources coming to Tyler to lead this convocation:
- Dr. Omer Reed, a well-known dentist and sought after speaker who is still going strong at age 82 and practices in Phoenix. The picture on his web site is a perfect image for him!
- Dr. Kevin Irons, former president of the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners, a periodontist from Austin, Texas who had to retire because of back issues, now works with dentists buying and selling practices through his company, Irons Advisory.
- Mr. Scott Wiedman, Business Development Representative from Heartland Dental.
Location
The meeting will be held at the Cascades Country Club in Tyler, Texas.
There are daily flights into Pounds Field Airport (TYR) via Dallas (DFW) or Houston (IAH) on American or Continental. Southwest does not fly into Tyler.
You can also fly into Dallas or Shreveport and rent a car.
We are about a 2-hour drive from Dallas, a 90-minute drive from Shreveport, and a 4-hour drive from Houston or Austin.

Attendees
This meeting will be limited to a small number of dentists. I want small group interaction and questions and objections, not a lecture hall environment. There will be no bullshit and no sales efforts, just legitimate pros and cons of the different ways we might envision from moving on from what we are doing to more of what we want to be doing! There very well might be some younger dentists here to look at things from a buying perspective, too.
